The Algerian Air Force comes first in this ranking with a fleet made up entirely of fourth-generation combat aircraft. The backbone of the fleet consists of about 45 Su-30MKA heavy fighters, the Su-30s being supported by four small tactical squadrons of medium-weight MiG-29S fighters, according to Military Watch. The aircraft are all equipped with state-of-the-art armament, including R-27ER and R-77 long-range air-to-air missiles. Algeria also has the largest fleet of combat aircraft in Africa with 36 Su-24Ms in service. It also deploys a squadron of 15 MiG-25PDS Foxbat interceptors. The MiG-25 is the heaviest fighter aircraft in Africa and the fastest in the world.
(2nd Egypt)
The only country in Africa to deploy modern early warning aircraft, Egypt, since a new military government came to power, has invested heavily in its armed forces. Its air force is equipped with 18 fighter squadrons. One of them, according to Military Watch, is equipped with modern air-to-air missiles beyond the visual range (this is a single unit of recently ordered MiG-29M). Nine squadrons are made up of F-16 Fighting Falcons, while seven other squadrons are miG-21 and J-7, whose electronic equipment has been upgraded to meet third-generation standards. Egypt, in addition to the MiG-29M, is also deploying 17 Mirage 2000 and 24 Rafale. Although its fleet is far from modern, things are expected to improve as Egypt has, among other things, commanded a single squadron of Su-35 heavy fighters, which would allow it to have the best-performing jets on the continent, according to Military Watch.
3rd Angola
The Angolan Air Force was built in the 1980s with the support of Cuba, the Soviet Union and East Germany, as well as North Korea. Its purpose was to fight the South African apartheid regime, and the MiG-23 rotary-wing fighters, which made up the bulk of the fleet, were flown by foreigners, mainly from Cuba.
According to Military Watch, "a single Squadron of MiG-23s of approximately 28 fighters remains in service, along with a MiG-21BiS squadron and a Su-22 squadron, providing three units of modernized third-generation aircraft."
(4th) Ethiopia
The Ethiopian Air Force was established in the 1990s during the country's war with Eritrea. Its aircraft were initially flown by foreigners, and the backbone of its fleet was previously made up of Soviet MiG-23s. Today, with a single squadron of about eight fighters, most of its fleet consists of Air Superiority Su-27 heavy fighters, of which an estimated 12 to 16 are in service, according to Military Watch. The MiG-23 is mainly assigned to an air-to-ground role and serves alongside some Su-25 attack jets. Ethiopia is also deploying 18 Mi-24/35 attack helicopters, and last year deployed Russian-made Pantsir S1 air defence combat vehicles as part of the modernization of its air defences.
5th Morocco
The backbone of the Moroccan Air Force is formed by about 23 F-16C Fighting Falcon light fighters equipped with AIM-120C7 air-to-air missiles. The Moroccan Fighting Falcons are one of the most successful Western fighters in Africa. According to Military Watch, the F-16s can "deploy AGM-88B HARM combat air-to-ground missiles that are very powerful against air defense and radar sites." The rest of the Moroccan fleet consists of aging third-generation models, including the F-5E Tiger II, of which 22 are in service, and 26 Mirage F1. Moroccan Mirages are considered the best performing in the world, and have been upgraded to deploy MICA missiles with limited air-to-air capability beyond visual range.
